Methodology

At scan time, DNS Tool resolves the target domain's core records (A, AAAA, MX, NS, TXT, CNAME) using five independent public DNS resolvers — Cloudflare, Google Public DNS, Quad9, OpenDNS, and DNS4EU. As a separate verification step, it then queries Google Public DNS (via DNS-over-HTTPS) and Cloudflare DNS (via DNS-over-HTTPS) to cross-reference those results for the same record types.

Records are normalized (trailing dots removed, case-folded, sorted) and compared set-to-set. A match means identical, non-empty record sets — corroboration that the record exists. Absent means both sides queried successfully and found no records — corroboration of absence, reported separately from a present match. Partial means overlapping but not identical (common during DNS propagation) — a discrepancy, not corroboration. A mismatch means no overlap — which may indicate a configuration error, propagation delay, or split-horizon DNS. A failed provider lookup is reported as unavailable, never as an absence.

This cross-referencing is not a guarantee of correctness — it is corroboration. Multiple independent sources observing the same records increases confidence in the data. This is standard practice in intelligence analysis (per ICD 203) and scientific methodology.

We log your IP address for two reasons: rate limiting (so nobody abuses the service) and security (identifying malicious actors and complying with legal obligations). We check source geography for analysis accuracy — DNS responses vary by region, and knowing which resolver answered from where makes the science better.

No tracking cookies. No analytics cookies. No ad networks. No data brokers. Our code is open-core — the application framework is publicly available under BUSL-1.1 with timed Apache-2.0 conversion. Verify it yourself.

Public analyses are archived by a third party. When a scan is not marked private or run as /dev/null, its report URL is submitted to the Internet Archive, which creates a permanent public record outside our control. That is deliberate — it gives every published analysis tamper-evident provenance independent of us — but it is not reversible, so it is stated here before you scan rather than after.
